Day Three

by Jim Barber, June 28, 2015

Keszthely – Badacsony (30 kms)
It was not intentional but proved to be a good idea to plan only 30 kms for the day after palinka tasting…
It was the castle day. First we visited the Keszthely castle and got amazed. All of its rooms were beautiful but our favourite the library was. Then we climbed up to Szigliget castle which is in ruin already but you can still feel how grandiose it was in the old days. And hard to find the proper word for the view from its towers.
The village with the same name is just enchanting with its white and thatched houses and has very good restaurant in the center.

Szigliget castle is located on the top of the volcano plugs that lines this part of the route. The next plug, which dominates the whole view of the Western basin of the lake, was already the volcano of Badacsony. It is the place of countless family vineyards, wineries, press houses and wine merchants. In the hot weather there is nothing more refreshing than an ice cold spritzer in a chill wine cellar or a swim in the lake. But we actually went for both…

The wine tasting was held in the Sipos winery by a pretty wine maker lady. We got delicious stew and perfect wines.
